In the early 17th century the Jacobean fortified mansion, Portumna Castle,
was built by Richard Burke, the fourth Earl of Clanricarde.
At the time it was one of the finest and most innovative buildings
in Ireland. In 1822 it was destroyed by fire, but it is now
undergoing an extensive programme of restoration by Dchas, the
Heritage Service for Ireland. The restoration is expected to take
many years, so The Virtual Experience Company were commissioned to
recreate the Great Hall, in order to enable visitors to see parts
of the Castle in its former glory. A Virtual Reality model was
constructed and used as part of a short video outlining the role
of the Great Hall at the castle.
